North Wales Mini Break

World Class Scenic Steam Journeys

Tour Overview

This short road and rail break will provide plenty of time to enjoy the highlights of the world's oldest narrow gauge railways – the Ffestiniog Railway and the Welsh Highland Railway.

  • Great steam journeys – ride the world-famous Ffestiniog Railway from Porthmadog to Blaenau Ffestiniog, with the option to stop at Tan-y-Bwlch for lunch and woodland walks, before exploring Porthmadog’s bustling harbour.
  • Welsh Highland Railway journey – travel in the opposite direction through Snowdonia National Park, past the dramatic Aberglaslyn Pass to Beddgelert, then climb high along Mount Snowdon’s foothills before descending to sea level at Caernarfon with its imposing castle.
  • Flexible options and excursions to consider – extending your break allows time to visit Portmeirion, the Llechwedd Slate Mines or the Welsh Highland Heritage Railway.
  • This is a recommended self-drive rail holiday, but we can arrange rail tickets from your home station to North Wales and organise local road transport if you prefer.
Experience comfort and style – why not upgrade your stay with First Class seats on both railways and an opulent stay at the Italianate Portmeirion Hotel.

Travel Tips

  • Whilst travelling to and around North Wales is possible using mainline rail, to remain more flexible during your stay, we recommend making your trip self-drive
  • The Ffestiniog & Welsh Highland Railway in Porthmadog is open from March/April until Oct/November each year
  • You could choose to visit during one of the railway’s events such as the annual Bygones Weekend in October
  • The Welsh Highland Railway is the UK's longest heritage railway, stretching for 25 miles from Caernarfon to Porthmadog, passing through stunning scenery such as Beddgelert and the Aberglaslyn Pass
  • Similarly, the Ffestiniog Railway runs from Blaenau Ffestiniog to Porthmadog, offering views of forests and mountains
  • For an indulgent accommodation option you may decide to stay in the Italianate village of Portmeirion in a castle room, village suite or hotel room
  • A 3-night break gives time to explore Porthmadog and take 2 scenic steam train journeys
  • There is a varied range of restaurants, cafés and bars in Porthmadog that offer both world cuisine together with Welsh specialities you may like to try
  • Why not extend your stay and consider spending a day at the much-loved private village of Portmeirion, 2 miles from Porthmadog. It offers spectacular views, sub- tropical gardens, shops and restaurants
