The Dalmatian Coast is well known for its stunning beauty, but the remote mountains of the north are much less visited though equally beautiful. Our comprehensive tour does justice to both and also includes a touch of Serbia for good measure.

ITINERARY

Day 1 – Flight to Belgrade

Lunchtime flight from London Heathrow to Belgrade, arriving early evening. Transfer to centrally located hotel.

Day 2 – Across the Border into Montenegro

We take the train from Belgrade and very soon find ourselves heading west in glorious mountain scenery. Our destination is Bijelo Polje, a small border town which will be our home for 3 nights.

Day 3 – We Meet the Locals

After a short walking tour of the town, we drive to the Djalovica Gorge and St. Nicholas Monastery. We lunch with a local family and have an evening meal on a farm where the owner is famous for his cheese making. There’s local music too.

Day 4 – Springs, Waterfalls & Lakes

Drive to the Ali Pasha Springs close to the Kosovan border, the Grlja Waterfall and the small town of Plav. Lunch is included at a local restaurant.

Day 5 – Local Train to Bar

The railway line to Bar on the Dalmatian Coast is justifiably famous as one of the most scenic in Europe. For 80 miles between Bijelo Polje and Podgorica, the line climbs high above the valley and there are wonderful views of the surrounding mountains.

Day 6 – The Dalmatian Coast

Much of the coastline around Budva has now been highly developed but the town still has an historic central area which we visit before moving on to the beautiful Bay of Kotor. Kotor itself is an old port surrounded by fortifications built during the Venetian period. It is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Continue to Podgorica for an overnight stay.

Day 7 – Beautiful Virpazar

After a short drive to the Skadar Lake, we transfer to a boat to reach Virpazar, a lovely lakeside village in a region famous for its small family vineyards. We lunch and have wine tasting at one of the vineyards before returning by road to Podgorica.

Day 8 – Ostrog Monastery

Local train to Niksic to visit the Ostrog Monastery, perched on an almost vertical rock face. Continue by road into the mountains of the Durmitor National Park for a 3-night stay with evening meals included.

Day 9 – Tara Canyon & Durmitor National Park

The Tara Canyon is Europe’s deepest and the Tara Bridge which crosses it must rank as one of Europe’s most stunning. A day of amazing mountain scenery also includes a visit to the Black Lake and lunch with a local family.

Day 10 – Durmitor, Montenegro’s Highest Mountain

A full day’s drive on mountain roads circumnavigating Durmitor. Lunch included at a local restaurant.

Day 11 – Flight to Belgrade

Drive to Podgorica Airport for afternoon flight to Belgrade.

Day 12 – Free Day in Belgrade

Free day in Serbia’s capital city. Our hotel is within easy walking distance of the city centre sights including the fortress and Kalemegdan Park.

Day 13 – Return to London

Mid-morning flight to London arriving at lunchtime.

Due to the restrictions on size of coach on mountain roads, this tour will be limited to 15 persons.
