Tuesday 13 August to Thursday 22 August 2019
Based in Salzburg, this unique tour is a feast of transport offerings and includes some special items exclusive to Ffestiniog Travel. Salzburg, with its many castles, palaces and UNESCO old town is close to some fantastic transport gems and is an ideal base for daily excursions.
Day 1 – London to Cologne
Depart on mid-morning Eurostar from London St Pancras to Brussels, then onwards to Cologne for an overnight stay.
Day 2 – Cologne to Salzburg
Leaving Cologne after breakfast we follow the course of the River Rhine southwards as far as Mannheim before turning south east via Ulm to Salzburg. We are based here for 7 nights.
Day 3 – Krimml
Full day beginning with a coach transfer to Zell am See where we board the steam train for the return journey to Krimml. Whilst at Krimml, there is time to visit the famous waterfalls, and lunch is also included. We end the day with a guided tour of the depot at Zell before returning to Salzburg by road.
Day 4 – Salzburg
Travel to the Stiegl Brewery where we have a guided tour followed by lunch. Then by bus to Freilichtmuseum (open air museum) with a tour and the chance to ride the 1.7 km long museumbahn.
Day 5 – Salzburger Lokalbahn
We spend today on the local network including a guided tour of the depot and a private charter train with photo stops, runs pasts etc to Trimmelkam and return. Lunch is included in a local restaurant.
Day 6 – St Wolfgang
Coach transfer to St Wolfgang and the Schafbergbahn which is the steepest cog wheel railway in Austria. We have a chartered steam train to the summit and back with photo stops and time to have some lunch. On arrival back into St Wolfgang we visit the depot before we sail across the lake to St Gilgen. Return by road to Salzburg.
Day 7 – Salzburg Again
Morning ride on the cable car Festungsbahn to the fortress which towers over the city. After a guided tour of the fortress, and time for lunch, we descend with the “Reisszug” – the oldest preserved cable car in the world – before a trolley bus city tour on a historic vehicle and a visit to the trolley bus depot.
Day 8 – Berchtesgaden
Train from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden with a break for sightseeing and lunch, before continuing to Freilassing for a guided tour of Lokwelt. This museum is based in a former depot and is a mix of new technology and restored items. There is even a simulator if you want to try to drive a loco! Return by train to Salzburg.
Day 9 – Return to Cologne
Time to say farewell and head for home. We travel via Frankfurt to Cologne for an overnight stay.
Day 10 – To London
Early morning train from Cologne to Brussels to connect with Eurostar, arriving back into London St Pancras early afternoon.
